Recording limits and behavior

Recording states

StateWhat Proset doesAvailable actions
IdleThe recorder is open but no audio is being captured.Start or leave the recorder.
RecordingAudio is being captured and the timer advances.Pause, finish, or discard.
PausedThe active recording is retained without capturing new audio.Resume, finish, or discard.
FinishedProset saves the audio and begins upload and cloud transcription.Open the recording detail.

Opening the recorder does not start audio capture.

Plan limits

PlanMaximum length
Free3 minutes
Base15 minutes
Pro30 minutes

A live recording is bounded by what one take can hold on your device. To transcribe something longer, import the file instead — see Importing an audio or video file.

Local storage is unlimited on every plan. For cloud storage and all plan allowances, see Plans, prices, and limits.

Automatic behavior

  • When the maximum length is reached, Proset finishes and saves the recording.
  • After a recording is saved, Proset uploads it and starts cloud transcription.
  • On Android, an active recording can continue in the background while its foreground-service notification is present.
  • A browser may suspend microphone access when the Proset tab is hidden.

Importing an audio or video file

Instead of recording, you can import an audio or video file. Proset takes the audio out of a video file, so a lecture capture or a screen recording with sound works the same way an audio file does.

  • Proset measures the file's actual length and applies the same limit as a recording, so a compressed or renamed file cannot slip past it.
  • The file is sent straight to cloud storage, so a large video does not travel through Proset's API.
  • Proset keeps the audio it extracted, not the original file you uploaded.
  • Long files are transcribed in parts, split at natural pauses, and joined back together — so a 60-minute file takes a few minutes rather than a few seconds.
  • If a file is longer than your plan allows, Proset tells you how long it is and asks you to split it into shorter files and import them one at a time.
  • An imported file becomes a normal recording: it plays back, can be retried or re-transcribed, and can be used for conversions.
  • Importing needs cloud storage, so it is unavailable on the Free plan.
